Which La Pavoni do I have? Pre-Millennium vs Millennium
Short answer
Look inside the group, under the shower screen. A plastic sleeve or liner means a Millennium machine (made from about 2000 on) with a basket of about 51mm. No sleeve means pre-Millennium, with a basket of about 49mm. The two take different gasket kits and baskets.
The two-minute check
- Unplug the machine and let it cool. Remove the portafilter.
- Look up into the group, past the shower screen. Use a torch.
- A plastic sleeve or liner lining the cylinder means a Millennium machine. Orphan Espresso calls this “the absolute guaranteed 100% accurate way to tell.”
- No sleeve means pre-Millennium.
Then confirm with the basket. 1st-line, a US parts retailer, says Millennium baskets measure about 51mm inside diameter and pre-Millennium baskets about 49mm. A label reading MILLENIUM under the base is a bonus when it is there, but it is often missing.
What changes between them
| Pre-Millennium | Millennium | |
|---|---|---|
| When | Before about 2000 | About 2000 on (sources say August 2000 or 2001) |
| Inside the group | No sleeve | Plastic sleeve |
| Basket inside diameter | About 49mm | About 51mm |
| Gasket kit | Smaller group gasket, no sleeve seal | Larger group gasket plus a sleeve seal |
| Tamper | Sized for 49mm baskets | Sized for 51mm baskets |
Orphan Espresso sums up the gasket difference: the Millennium kit has “a larger (D profile) group portafilter gasket and the sleeve seal”. The other parts in the kit are the same.
Older machines: the three generations
Francesco Ceccarelli, who documents La Pavoni history in detail, describes three generations of the Europiccola:
- First generation (about 1961 to 1974). The group screws onto the boiler and has an internal brass sleeve. These need their own gasket kits.
- Second generation (1974 to about 2000). The brass sleeve was dropped in 1974 and the group became fixed to the boiler with two bolts. This is the classic pre-Millennium machine.
- Third generation, the Millennium. A Teflon (plastic) sleeve in the group, with a larger filter holder and filters.
Ceccarelli also notes changes inside each generation, for example a three-position switch from 1974, the heating element fixed to the base with three bolts from 1980, and a pressurestat and thermofuse on the Europiccola from about 1990. If your machine has a two-position or three-position switch and no pressurestat, it is an older pre-Millennium model.
Reading the age from the machine
There is no published serial-number-to-year table for later machines. Two practical clues:
- The heating element flange is stamped with its date of manufacture. Stefano, the founder of Espresso Care, says the machine is usually within 6 to 12 months of that date.
- Features. Compare the switch, base and pressurestat against Ceccarelli’s version table.
Professional and Stradivari
The Professional uses the same group generations. One long-time owner notes there are no first-generation Professionals. The Stradivari is built on the same levers, so the same checks apply.
Next steps
Once you know your generation, buy parts that are listed for it. If a fault brought you here, go back to the troubleshooting hub or send a repair request.

Questions owners ask
When did the Millennium La Pavoni start?
Sources differ. One US parts retailer says Millennium models were made after August 2000. Other sources say the group change came in 2001. If your machine is from 2000 or 2001, check the group rather than the date.
Is there a label that says Millennium?
Often there is a tag under the base that reads MILLENIUM. Orphan Espresso notes it is frequently missing or faded, so the plastic sleeve in the group is the more reliable check.
Do Millennium and pre-Millennium machines share parts?
Many parts are shared, but not the group parts that matter most. Orphan Espresso says the Millennium kit differs by a larger portafilter gasket and an extra sleeve seal. Baskets, portafilters and tampers are also different sizes.
How can I tell roughly when an older machine was made?
Stefano of Espresso Care has said the heating element flange is stamped with its manufacture date, and the machine is usually within 6 to 12 months of it. Francesco Ceccarelli's version table matches features to years.
